Mikkel Carl (DK):
MC’s artistic practice develops the relationship between language and perceptual experience, concept and materiality. This takes place through a cross-media practice, which often enters into a critically inspired dialogue with some of the efforts of 20th century avant-garde and neo-avant-garde movements, in particular Conceptual Art and Minimal Art. Accordingly, he shows a continuing interest in ‘found’ objects, which are modified and staged anew in order to displace their original registers of aesthetic and semantic content. If a tree falls in the forest and no one is around:
If a tree falls… is a re-enactment of Carl Andre’s Log Piece, Aspen 1968. Instead of loosely assembled logs of wood, an exact outline is presented on the forest floor using 84 prefab biomass briquettes made from highly compressed sawdust. The work is located in the woods owned by Sorø Akademi – a foundation running the eponymous, historically renowned boarding school but also profiting from the production of timber and firewood.
